SIMULTAN 2015. Festival Program

In Events and Exhibitions / October 5, 2015

SIMULTAN media art festival has announced its program for the 11th edition, titled Talking to Strangers. Taking place in a new location close to Timisoara city centre, this edition was conceived around ideas of hope, trust, belief and renewed consciousness. “What would Voyager 3 contain if it would be re-launched today, after 38 years?” ask the initiators ahead of probably the most challenging edition of the festival so far. “In 1977, an information package was launched into space, a symbolical selection for the human civilization, launched with the intention to be intercepted or discovered by an alien civilization. A sort of “hello” from the humans, a way of saying “we are here.” Today, maybe, such a package would contain microchips, texts with smiley faces at a correct decoding. We would probably brag about the invention of a virtual communication system, about our intelligent control systems? Our self-control or the controlling of others. We might also include some e-books about the human nature, on micro-SD cards, because we also advanced our knowledge in the field of psychoanalysis. Why wouldn’t we send a picture of Osama or of other terrorists that we cannot find, maybe they would help us with that. Maybe we could simply send a cry for help, in the hope that in the thousand years that would take them to discover it, there would still be a chance for a few of us to be saved. Or Voyager 3 could be a new Noah’s ark, a capsule of DNA for a possible reconstruction.”

Such questions bring us closer to the important thing to know, according to the initiators – that we are not alone. The festival proposes works that address the need to understand how we ended up here and question whether efforts are worth when considering the state of consciousness we find ourselves at today. They ask, not without a sense of irony, if it wouldn’t be wiser “to enjoy our mere existence and to co-exist peacefully without exploiting each other for the sake of profit, without exercising our power and dominance over each other. Is this exploitation of others human nature? Is it the engine of progress? Is this evolution? Or is it evolution the creation of virtual realities where we can feed our brains with “01”? Till then, we have other serious problems. Soon the Earth will become overcrowded and under the human influence, the fight for territory drives the species to the verge of extinction. For now, we are preparing a colony to Mars… But meanwhile art must go on, contemplating and acting, re-acting with our creative means, being aware of the power of now. Hope exists as long as we believe in hope, as long as we believe in our creative power in order to save ourselves and hope for a broader echo.”

SIMULTAN is an annual festival dedicated to media art and artistic experiment, creating a bond between different media. Initiated by a group of artists, the festival was born as an artistic project having the goal to create a cultural context of the ‘here and now’ on the local scene, encouraging new and innovative forms of artistic expression, as visual and sound language. Annually, during the 3 days of events, take place video art screenings, audio-visual live performances, experimental music concerts, installations and lectures. The festival features local artists and projects, as well as national and international artists and projects, with the support of the different cultural centers which activate in Romania. Thus, the event intends to establish new cultural and artistic bonds between the Romanian and the international art scene.

KUBIKMILK / RO
Friday 9 OCT. / 20:00
Kubikmilk project is created by Adrian Budritan, one of the pioneers of the Romanian electronic music. He started sound design with modular analogue synthesisers (MS20, MS10) since 1987, and also programming algorythmic and stohastic music composition on the 8 bit computing of the 80’s. After a series of performing events with slideshow or lasers system for visuals in the 90’s, he became interested in the video production and 3D animation for the last 15 years, also performing as DJ in the dnb scene and visuals for various events. Over a year ago he started the project Kubikmilk, an intermedia project based on interactive art installation and sound design around the Max/Msp core and Processing framework for visuals. Adrian also makes music for films and theatre, live electronic music performance, expanded cinema (live and non narrative cinema). The sound of the Kubikmilk is based on digital sound (Max/Msp) and hardware synthesizers driving multiple sound parameters via MIDI using devices like Kinect or multitouch tablets. soundcloud / facebook

ERIKM / FR
LIVE PERFORMANCE
Saturday 10 OCT. / 20:00
eRikm deals with sounds like living organisms, constantly in flux, always open to the risk of accident or delight/unisson. As he plays with all these contradictions in his improvisations, his performance reaches new heights of intensity, trading off both understanding and sensation, seriousness and farce, anticipation and instinct. His work references both the intimate and political, both popular and high culture, but without demonstration. Rather he creates a short-circuit connection between points with his live generated (and degenerated) material – from noise to reference – presenting multiple ways to capture each moment of the present in clear focus. Throughout his career, collaborations have naturally occurred with his audiences and contemporaries, most notably: Luc Ferrari, Christian Marclay, Mathilde Monnier, Jerome Noetinger, FM Einheit… The kind of coincidences which have confirmed his instinctive search for transmutation, and to play on several levels. website

ARMIES / RO
LIVE PERFORMANCE
Wednesday 7 OCT. / 21:00
Armies is a trip-hop / ambient project started in September 2013 by Ovidiu Zimcea (film score composer, Exit Oz founding member and former guitarist in free improv project Paperjam) in Timișoara, Romania. In autumn 2014, Sebastian Hamburger (theatre score composer, Kooperativa founding member, former drummer in Pavilionul 32) joins the project. In the beginning the project idea was used for scoring short and feature documentaries about monitorisation and the exploitation of human rights and resources. These were all collaborations with independent film producers from the UK, Switzerland and the United Nations, and this process is where the name later came from. soundcloud / facebook

KAIROTOSCOPE
INSTALLATION: KAIROTOSCOPE – prototype N.1
a kinetic interactive installation by IOANA VREME MOSER /RO
The installation follows the principles of Joseph Plateau’s Phenakistoscope, an early animation device using the persistence of vision principle to create an illusion of motion. The waves are being animated with an 16 Hz Stroboscope light. The gestures are captured optically and played one by one by an interactive system that produces a large scale of frequencies and noises as the public moves the camera along the surface of the disk. The Kairotoscope displays deviations that occur in a straight line, time loops that highlight the so called kairotic’ moments. Such small time gaps can be pre-announced by domestic procrastination and avoidance habits. Designed as an instrument, the wave-shaped patterns are constructed as actual sound waves that contract and expand in various tensions. There has been a lot of effort in generating just one second of movement. I’m using the most complicated way of getting to the conclusion, by this understanding that the process will be slowed down and the result delayed as much as possible.

YVAT / RO – ‘ENLIVENER’
LIVE PERFORMANCE
Saturday 10 OCT. / 21:00
A forty-five minutes AV show introduces the new Yvat album, ENLIVENER, released by DETROIT UNDERGROUND, U. S. Well designed analogue sound and textures merge in fresh underground, yet mass appealing arrangements, in a spectacular live performance of experimental electronica. Versatile, oversensitive, touchy and catchy voices that will haunt your ears for days come to complete the experience. Live sound is emphasized by classic 3D projections, inviting in a colorful, flashy surrealist ambiance. Put on your 3D glasses and get ready for the show. Music by yvat. Visuals by Ovidiu Solcan. Photosensitive Seizure Warning: flashing light.

After 10 years of electronic music and more than 25 released albums, yvat might be considered one of the most vivid and productive exponents of the IDM scene in Eastern Europe. His music is mature and highly developed, yet retains a fresh and experimental edge; the sound is always strong and clear, with an analogue profoundness, and composition has an aggressive touch in the framework of a melodic geometry reminding of Boards of Canada and early works from Autechre. Music is built on a combination of complex glitchy beat programming, darkly atmospheric textures and subtle melodic elements. In the past years, yvat’s music has been produced by well known experimental labels from UK such as Boltfish Recordings or Cactus Island. The atmospheric soundscapes, fractured melofic lines and glitchy beats bring IDM structures to a next level. The audience is transported into a space journey, then crushed into aggressive beats and noises. website

MICHAL CÁB / CZ
LIVE PERFORMANCE / LECTURE
Wednesday 7 OCT. / 20:00
Thursday 8 OCT. / 13:00

Event I. (audiovisual comprovisation): Wednesday 7 OCT. / 20:00
An Event I. is both audio-visual instrument and also performance which is proceed with DIY instrumnet programmed in Pure Data. Main source of signal is (pseudo) random noise which is than routed through simple effects like blure, zoom, gain and so on. Playing this instrument is like fighting with beast – one can never be sure about the result – but is is usually massive.

Lecture: About Instruments…: Thursday 8 OCT. / 13:00
First I would shortly present and explain a code from performance Event I. and than I would reflect on importance of building and knowing the instrument. Shortly I would give an overview of languages which can be effectivly used in creating audio-visual instruments. I would also focus on broader context of these tendencies – eg. ethos of DIY, black-boxes and postdigital culture.

Michal Cáb, aka Cabowitz is a conceptual artist, performer, musician and teacher. “His productions oscillate between sound and image, discreet activism and natural humbleness, inventive collaborations and concentrated singleness. He teaches, plays and works with open software (Pure Data), code and feed-back.” He studied at FAMU’s Center of Audio Visual Studies and currently does his Ph.D. at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. website

Adda Kaleh’s subtle arrangements are situated somewhere in the vast field of dreamy, yet mature indie pop and electronica. SOMNOROASE PĂSĂRELE / RO
LIVE PERFORMANCE
Thursday 8 OCT. / 21:00
Named after a famous eponymous poem by a Romanian poet Mihai Eminescu, is a duo from Romania, based between the coastal city of Constanta and the capital Bucharest. Gili Mocanu is an established painter and together with Elena Album, also a visual artist, they have started a musical endeavor, quirky and tactical, organic yet otherwordly, witty and utterly serious at the same time. Their musical output is conceptual, ranging from twenty minute long medleys to recontextualisations of Caucescu’s speech. The sonics are idiosyncratic, alien mutant sounds that are mysterious and beautiful at the same time. soundcloud

SILLYCONDUCTOR + DREAMREC / RO
LIVE PERFORMANCE
Thursday 8 OCT. / 22:00
Sillyconductor’s 20015 project, premiered this year is a luxurious and ironic journey through different fear inducing entities, from basic feelings like hunger and agoraphobia to actual insects. Sound sources, among others, include a polyrhythmic exploration into the word yeah, a small door revolving in space looking for its mother, feedback and distorsion, too much random FX, too much reggae, too little bossanova, enough falsettos, gasping, coughing, sneezing, mids, kids, farting bees, middle-eastern percussion and one unrequested encore. It’s an audio-video partnership with Dreamrec, who will be highlighting all these darwinistic freaks of nature with his custom feedback contraptions. soundcloud

Dreamrec is a media artist. Founding partner of Videogram, a collective of 3 professionals using their experience in film-making, architecture and graphic design to deliver creatively infused and high technological projects. In the last 5 years, we had the pleasure to colaborate with a variety of clients, institutions and artists, and suport them with our creative work. vimeo

SCENOCOSME / FR
INSTALLATION
‘AKOUSMAFLORE’
an interactive sound installation by scenocosme /FR
7-10 oct. at SIMULTAN FESTIVAL 2015
Grégory Lasserre and Anaïs met den Ancxt are two artists working together as a duo under the name Scenocosme. They develop the concept of interactivity in their artworks by using multiple kinds of expression. Their works come from possible hybridizations between the living world and technology which meeting points incite them to invent sensitive and poetic languages. They also explore invisible relationships with our environment: they can feel energetic variations of living beings. They design interactive artworks, and choreographic collective performances, in which spectators share extraordinary sensory experiences. Akousmaflore is an interactive installation, a small garden composed of living musical plants, which react to human contacts. Each plant reacts in a different way to contact by producing a specific sound. The plant «language» or song occurs through touch and the close proximity of the spectator. Our invisible electrostatic aura acts on the plant branches and encourages them to react. In their artwork, the artists create hybrids between plants and digital technology. Plants are natural sensors and are sensitive to various energy flows. Digital technologies permit us to establish a relationship between plants and sound. website

GONDWANA / IT
LIVE PERFORMANCE
Wednesday 7 OCT. / 22:00
As a member of Lumisokea, Andrea Taeggi shapes acoustic and electronic sound alongside Koenraad Ecker, into their singular take on bass music. Time signatures fold into themselves, volleying voluptuous percussions and sesimic synthscape. This seismic fixation extends beyond press hyperbole into aesthetic and philosophical study and on ‘Aum’ Taeggi presents the debut release of his Gondwana project. As Gondwana-land saw a pre-Pangaean unified land mass so Andreas solo mission is to draw all his influences together and mediate the whole. soundcloud / facebook
